IV. Specific Baptist Distinctives Considered
The following portions are quoted from http://www.allaboutbaptists.com/distinctives.html:
A. INDIVIDUAL SOUL LIBERTY
“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
~ 2 Corinthians 3:17
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” ~ Galations 5:1
“But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” ~ James 1:25
Baptists have had a long-term determination to adhere to the Biblical doctrine that they call “Individual Soul Liberty.”
Church history verifies that Christians have died for this principle. The teaching that individuals are sovereign in matters of faith is one that Baptists will not compromise.
The individual soul is answerable to Almighty God and to Him alone. This precludes giving up that independency to a pope, a priest, a system, an organization, a convention, a fellowship, an association, or any other human being. None of these are given the authority to interpose anything whatsoever between the individual believer and God concerning any matter of faith.
To demand, whether directly or indirectly, that believers submit to any kind of authoritarian rule is both unscriptural and, in fact, questionable. This generation has seen its Jim Jones’s and David Karesh’s. Whenever believers give up their individual soul liberty in favor of following the demands of another person or affiliation, they do indeed compromise this essential doctrine of the faith.
B. PRIESTHOOD OF THE BELIEVER
| “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” ~ 1 Peter 2:5 |
| Every born-again believer has direct access to the throne of God. Therefore, since every child of God shares in the priesthood of the believers, all have the same right as ordained ministers to communicate with God, interpret Scripture, and minister in Christ’s name. This is first and foremost a matter of responsibility and servanthood, not privilege and license.
Where does the Bible teach that only ordained “priests” can hear confessions and determine penence? The Baptists will tell you that no such indication exists in all of Scripture and they are right. |
According to the Scriptures, every born-again believer has access to God. This was secured by Christ’s redemptive work on the cross. We are to have “boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 10:19).” Furthermore, the Holy Spirit enables our access as we “have access by one Spirit to the Father (Ephesians 2:18).”
C. BIBLICAL AUTHORITY
| The Bible is the final authority in all matters of belief and practice because the Bible is inspired by God and bears the absolute authority of God Himself. Whatever the Bible affirms, Baptists accept as true. No human opinion or decree of any church group can override the Bible. Even creeds and confessions of faith, which attempt to articulate the theology of Scripture, do not carry Scripture’s inherent authority. |
| “For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.” ~ 1st Thessalonians 2:13 |

There is an undeniable mass exodus of church attendees between the ages of 18 and 22. Kids that sit in church all their lives and go through Awana and Word of Life programs come to the conclusion that church is not essential to their lives. Thom and Sam Rainer answer some questions about the mass exodus in their book,
The first chapter in the book of Romans states that God reveals Himself to humanity by nature. Today, God also reveals Himself to the creatures by the human conscience and the Bible. Glacier National Park in Montana is quite a spectacle. The crisp lakes encircled by colossal mountains are awe-inspiring sights. The panoramas reveal just how insignificant the onlooker is in respect to the rest of the universe. Natural wonders demand questions of their origin. According to Romans, human beings know there is a Creator by perceiving creation. The wonders of nature do not produce atheists. The consciences of individual free-thinking humans do not create atheists. And the Bible, which claims to be the exhaling of an infinite and almighty Creator, does not produce atheists. The real atheism manufacturer has taken child like faith and warped it into a twisted and calloused distrust of God time and time again. It has left billions of people in its path of destruction. It has been doing so for millennia. This malicious manufacturer is the problem of pain.
and Atheist alike, can relate to common stresses. But Christian circles can bring some unique stresses of their own. Keeping up with the church across town. Making sure you have just the right materials for the Sunday school class you help teach. Having all the right decorations for the next church fellowship where everyone hangs around their same familiar clique. Reading the most cutting edge Christian fiction book. Downloading the newest hit of the most popular Christian group. Tracking down Max Lucado’s and Beth Moore’s latest books.
Jesus Christ is God (John 1:1; Col. 2:9; I Tim. 3:16; Heb. 1:1-3), the second person of the Trinity. Jesus Christ was born of virgin (Is. 7:14; Matt. 1:23). He became God in the flesh at his incarnation (John 1:14). He added flesh, making Him fully God and fully man. I believe Jesus claimed full Deity (John 8:56-58; John 10:30). I believe Jesus Christ is the Messiah promised to Israel in the Old Testament (Luke 2:11; Luke 10:24; John 10:24-25; John 1:45; John 4:25-26). Jesus Christ is every church age believer’s Advocate and High Priest (Heb. 4:14; I John 2:1). Jesus will reign over the whole earth as King during the 1,000 year Millennial Kingdom. Judgment of believers and unbelievers has been delegated to Jesus Christ (John 5:22). A. Impeccability Jesus Christ never sinned nor was ever capable of sinning. His omniscience, omnipotence, and immutability keep Him from susceptibility to sin (Heb. 13:8). B. His Suffering Death Jesus Christ died on the cross as a substitution for sinners (Matt. 20:28; Mark 10:45; II Cor. 5:21). His death appeased the wrath of God for those who believe (Rom. 3:25; I John 2:2; I John 4:10). The death of Christ also makes it possible for individuals to be reconciled to God (Rom. 5:10; II Cor. 5:18-21). C. His Resurrection on the Third Day Jesus Christ bodily and physically rose from the dead on the third day according to the Scriptures (I Cor. 15:4-8).
